Q&A: Lead Software Engineer

Name: Kuldeep Singh
Title: Lead Software Engineer
Location: Foster City, CA
Time with Philips: + 11 Years

Kuldeep Singh oversees software R&D for our analytics team in the Enterprise Imaging group based in Foster City, CA. He has been with Philips for over 11 years in both India and the US helping design and implement software solutions for Philips.

What is your role at Philips?

I am the lead software engineer of the team here in Foster City. I oversee our high-level design and guide team members on implementation. I do a fair amount of coaching on various frameworks, languages, and help troubleshoot problems whenever possible.

Why did you ultimately decide to join Philips?

Philips was actually my first company right out of college. It was incredibly exciting to graduate and join a big, reputable company that I’d already heard so much about, even though most people don’t realize we’re a worldwide leader in healthtech. But what really pulled me here is that we are creating software solutions and technology that actually help people. We don’t just create technology, but the work we do is helping solve real world health problems. Not a lot of Software Engineers can say that.

What is the office environment like?

It’s very open, friendly, and comfortable. It’s very results-oriented, but we are given a lot of freedom to work how we want. Everyone is very respectful when it comes to holding each other accountable for deliverables. And we also know how to decompress. For example, in the evenings we unwind by playing table tennis or foosball. It’s all in good fun. Plus the views from our office are incredible as we overlook the bay.

What project are you currently working on?

I work on our IntelliSpace PACS Radiology Analytics. It assimilates disparate sources of data to deliver operational insights with the goal of helping radiology departments focus on making decisions to improve efficiency and performance.

What is the need for this technology in the market?

It’s a big data product that allows for a fast and scalable foundation to accessing large, unstructured datasets from many sources to deliver deeper insights as patient data expands across the healthcare enterprise. We track radiology workflows and resource utilization to see how efficiently doctors are working, and we can then extract all the analytics and provide them with different learnings and insights. This then allows hospitals to create efficiencies, improve quality of care and treat more people.

What is the most satisfying part of your job?

That’s easy. I can actually help improve people’s lives with our software. There’s nothing that beats that. We occasionally will go on field trips to hospitals to see the technology in action, and witness patients getting treated. We even get feedback directly from the end-user so we then know firsthand how to optimize. It’s a pretty impactful moment for our team to see people benefitting from my work.
