Philips Lighting puts breakthroughs on the stands

The Luxeon® K2 LED (Light Emitting Diode) has set industry benchmarks in a variety of areas including light output, temperature tolerance and drive current. Luxeon® K2 emitters enable the development of solid state lighting applications with more usable light, reduced thermal management engineering, lower cost and simpler manufacturing.

LEDs are ideal for color scene-setting: indoors and out. Using a single-color LED or a combination of three colored LEDs – red, green and blue (RGB) – adds an extra dimension, making it possible to mix colors from different luminaires or within one luminaire. Combined with imaginative design, this has laid the foundation for a new generation of cutting-edge products that offer an endless range of options for creating appealing light effects.

Luxeon® is a product of Lumileds Lighting, a Philips company that is the world’s only high-volume manufacturer of Power LEDs and a pioneer in the use of Solid State lighting solutions for everyday purposes including automotive lighting, camera flash, LCD televisions, portable lighting and general lighting.

Also on display: a groundbreaking new MASTER PL Electronic lamp, offering a much improved run-up time (reaching full brightness twice as fast as its predecessors) and a light output five times brighter than comparable lamps.

It’s also a Philips Green Flagship product, with reduced mercury levels, no lead content, and capable of lasting 15 times longer than a standard incandescent lamp - regardless of how often it is switched on and off. It also produces the same amount of light as an incandescent lamp while using 80% less energy.

This is good news at a time when recent research Philips Lighting has carried out has shown more than 75 percent of Europe’s office lighting is based on outdated and energy inefficient lighting systems which do not comply with the EU quality standards. Yet municipalities and private business owners who upgrade their lighting to more modern technology could reap massive total cost savings of 1 to 2 billion euros per year.

In addition, the environmental savings in CO2 emissions would equate to the planting of more than 300 million trees – the equivalent of each household in the EU adding two trees in their back gardens or surrounds.

Switching to fluorescent lighting control systems such as Philips’ ActiLume or LightMaster Modular (LMM) systems would cut lighting bills significantly and pay for their installation within a few years.

Installing lamps using the new generation of Philips electronic ballasts – such as the HF-Performer EII for fluorescent lamps and the PrimaVision for HID lamps – offers not just large energy and cost savings to customers, but can also play a major role in combating climate change. Reduced energy consumption will also lead to lower CO2 emissions, whilst the level of hazardous substances is being reduced to levels far below legal requirements.

Other important developments at the fair include news of Philips’ reduction in the mercury content of its CFL lamps to record industry lows... without affecting their high performance light output, reliability or lifetime in any way whatsoever. The environmental impact of saving hundreds of kilo’s of mercury will be significant and offers the market a clear ‘green’ alternative to existing compact fluorescent lamps.
