Rollable displays get own company

While it was still part of the Technology Incubator group, Polymer Vision developed the world’s first rollable electronic display with the READIUS. This prototype proved that such technology could be combined with a hand-held mobile device.

The READIUS’s paper-like display can be rolled out to a greater size than the actual device itself. It is easy to read, even in bright sunlight, and has significantly lower power requirements than an LCD display with backlight.

Once the user has finished reading, the display can simply be rolled back into the device. This makes it ideal for portable applications such as mobile phones, document readers and personal navigation systems.

With Polymer Vision now up and running at the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven in the Netherlands, it’s free to push ahead with commercialization plans to meet the fast-growing market demand for its technology from the mobile device industry. Production of its 5-inch monochrome rollable display will start this year, in cooperation with existing partners.
