Philips opens innovation center in Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood

Relocates groups of Western PA-based associates closer to universities, hospitals, research

MURRYSVILLE, Pennsylvania – Royal Philips (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHIA), a global leader in health technology, today announced the relocation of more than 100 of its Western PA-based employees to Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood. Philips signed a lease to occupy nearly 14,000 square feet of space on the fourth floor of the newly-developed Schenley Place, positioning the business closer to universities, medical centers, research partners and fellow innovation leaders within the community.

“By bringing our team closer to the heart of Pittsburgh, we generate even more opportunity to leverage the energy and growth of our innovation-rich city,” said John Frank, CEO of Philips sleep and respiratory business. “Working in close proximity to hospitals, universities, and start-ups alike will enable us to incubate our regional research partnerships and, ultimately, accelerate our ability to develop new solutions to drive the future of health technology.”

Philips expansion in to the Oakland neighborhood complements the company’s commitment to the greater Pittsburgh community and forming meaningful relationships with colleges and universities worldwide. Recently, Philips entered into a wide-ranging collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh that will benefit both organizations through talent development, addressing healthcare challenges and technology commercialization.

“We are incredibly proud of this alliance,” said Frank. “It’s a natural fit given our commitment to improving lives through innovation, both in the solutions we offer to our customers and the ideas we foster within our own organization. The relationship will allow for enhanced collaboration, entrepreneurship and recruitment opportunities with such a reputable and forward-thinking institution as the University of Pittsburgh.”

Since acquiring Murrysville-based Respironics – a leader in sleep and respiratory solutions – in 2008, Philips has been growing its presence in Western Pennsylvania with more than 1,700 local employees in the region today. Over the past two years, Philips has established new professional and distribution facilities in Murrysville and New Kensington, and completed construction of a brand new, state-of-the-art distribution and service facility in Mount Pleasant.

Striving to make the world healthier and more sustainable through innovation, Philips has a mission to improve the lives of three billion people a year by 2025, and in 2016 alone, improved 2.1 lives globally.1 Over the past ten years, in an effort to leverage its growing connected landscape to innovate new and impactful services and help people sleep and breathe better, Philips collected more than 2.5 billion nights of cloud-based data from more than 5 million connected sleep therapy and ventilation devices developed right here in Western Pennsylvania. With developments such as this relocation strategy, Philips continues to pioneer the advancement of digital and health innovation.
