A Breastfeeding Guide on Tips for Successful Breastfeeding

Breast milk does a whole lot more than just keep baby’s tummy full. Discover its amazing health benefits below, and ways to help your body produce it.

Boosting baby’s immune system

Breast milk is smarter than you might think. It’s not just fuel to help your baby grow. It also helps build their immune system. Within a few days of being exposed to a germ, your breast milk develops special antibodies to protect your little one from the same germs that you encounter. That’s some clever milk!

Developing baby’s taste buds

When you breastfeed, your baby eats what you eat, and it’s not just nutrients and antibodies that are passed on. Flavors from the foods you eat also end up in your milk. And while babies do naturally tend towards sweet flavors, your breast milk can offer them a wider range of flavors. This can help broaden their palette, which could mean less mealtime tantrums later on.

Making more milk

A quick search online will reveal an array of foods that "could" improve your milk supply when breastfeeding. However, most of these claims are anecdotal, with no real scientific facts to back them up. The truth is there is no sure fire way to boost your milk levels. So our advice is simply to eat regularly and eat well. Try not to miss meals and keep yourself fueled up with nutritious foods, like veggies, proteins, healthy fats and carbohydrates.

Drinking for two

Breast milk is 88% water, so you’ll find yourself feeling more thirsty than usual while you’re nursing. It’s important to stay hydrated, but you don’t need to force yourself to drink more. It’s a good idea to keep a full jug of water and a glass near you in the places where you nurse, so you can take regular sips to quench your thirst and replace the water you lose while breastfeeding.
