What do the labels "Local", "P2P" and "Relay" mean?

    Published on 2017-02-28

    “Local”

Both the monitor and the smartphone/tablet are using the same Wi-Fi network.

The quality of live-streaming is good and the latency (the time difference between actual and observed moment on the smartphone/tablet) is minimal. However, the performance can still be affected by the available network bandwidth (That is, how fast the data can be transferred). The network bandwidth depends on your internet provider package and the usage of other wireless devices (e.g. laptops using HD video streaming over the same network).

    “P2P” (“Peer-to-Peer”)

The monitor and the smartphone/tablet are connected to each other, but they are using different networks. For example, the monitor is connected to your home Wi-Fi network; but the smartphone/tablet is connected to a different network like 3G network or another Wi-Fi network. The quality of live video streaming is largely influenced by the network performance to which the smartphone/tablet is connected to. The technology inside Philips In.Sight has various intelligent ‘switches’ (like changing bit-rate and frame-per-second switching) which provides optimal streaming modes for different network performance. In poor network performance the quality of streaming can suffer, despite the intelligent switching.

    “Relay”

In.Sight monitors are designed to work with your smartphone or tablet on any network configuration. However, sometimes the network connection between the monitor and the smartphone/tablet is either firewalled or restricted in some way preventing a direct connection. In this case a relay connection is established to address this problem by using another client (relay) with unrestricted connectivity to relay the communication between the monitor and the smartphone/tablet. In this case bandwidth will be limited by the relay; quality of your video will be affected.
