Chicken & Waffles

Chicken & Waffles are a sweet and savory fan favorite. Surprise the family with a homemade healthier version of this mouthwatering dish made in the Airfryer XXL – it’s just as crispy as deep fried.

Servings 8 (makes 4 waffles), Preparation time 90 minutes (includes 60 minute marinate time), Cooking time: 30 minutes


  • Chicken
  • 8 chicken thighs skin on
  • 2 cups low-fat buttermilk
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp kosher salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp mustard powder
  • ½ tsp of cayenne pepper
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • Waffles
  • 1 cup whole wheat pastry flour
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 4 tbsp canola oil
  • 2 cups low-fat buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs, beaten


  • 1. Place buttermilk and chicken thighs in a resealable plastic bag and marinate in the fridge for 60 minutes.
  • 2. In a shallow bowl combine flour, salt, pepper, mustard powder, cayenne pepper and garlic powder.
  • 3. Remove chicken from buttermilk and pat dry, reserve the buttermilk in a shallow bowl. Dredge each thigh in the flour mixture, then in the buttermilk, then back in the flour mixture again to build a batter.
  • 4. Place all thighs in the Airfryer basket and cook at 350 for 12 minutes.
  • 5. While chicken cooks combine all waffle ingredients and pour into a pre-heated waffle iron. This makes four waffles.
  • 6. Cut each waffle into halves and serve with air-fried chicken thigh on top. Drizzle with honey or maple syrup.
