Liver biopsy has been considered the reference standard for fibrosis assessment and stage classification in the past but biopsy is invasive and can have interobserver variability at microscopic evaluation, with potentially severe complications. Ultrasound elastography, a noninvasive method for liver fibrosis assessment, has been a recent area of intense research and is beginning to replace liver biopsy as a method for diagnosis and follow-up of liver fibrosis.

Meet the speaker: Richard G. Barr, MD, PhD
Dr. Barr is a radiologist with Southwoods Imaging, located in Youngtown, Ohio. He is also a Professor of Radiology at Northeast Ohio Medical University. Dr. Barr has published numerous articles and provides various lectures worldwide regarding imaging and diagnosis, as well as the use of elastography.
