Philips med adherence solution receives Frost & Sullivan 2018 technology leadership award

We know that medication adherence, especially among seniors and all patients with chronic conditions, is a vital factor in keeping them well and out of the hospital.


Non-adherence not only impacts wellness but is a major factor in healthcare costs and sustainability, with estimates upwards of $300 billion annually, according to the New England Health Care Institute and other studies1, with a third of the costs related to hospitalizations.


Philips began confronting this issue in 2017, and we’ve brought a solution to market on the forefront of the growth in remote care and reimbursement, one that combines the patient, provider and pharmacist as an integrated and technology-enabled care team.


So of course we are very gratified to be recognized by Frost & Sullivan by receiving its North American Medication Adherence Enabling Technology Leadership Award, part of the organization’s 2018 Best Practice Awards, for our Philips Medication Adherence Solution (PMAS).2

“A unique feature set” 

From its examination of offerings in the marketplace, Frost & Sullivan’s Divyaa Ravishankar, industry principal/transformational health, stated that “a unique feature set to Philips in comparison to its competitors is the platform’s ability to operate in a wide variety of settings and situations … as healthcare moves toward the trend of decentralization, the access to technology and ease of patient access is important.”


And we developed the solution squarely with the patient in mind. The automated dispenser and audio-visual alert system connects to a patient’s phone line to provide scalable care team reporting and physician portal visualization to track any missed dosage and overall adherence.


In its detailed report accompanying the award, Frost & Sullivan highlighted these key features:

  • Notification alerts to important stakeholders
  • Remote reporting on defined KPIs for patient cohort
  • Home delivery of medications from specialty pharmacies
  • Easy-to-load refill packs that patients can load themselves
  • Wi-Fi/cellular connectivity for remote location data connection and monitoring

We were especially pleased that the report noted that the examination of adherence reached 98 percent, well above the World Health Organization’s 80 percent standard as a threshold that wherein patients benefit from a chronic medication plan.


That’s clearly our goal, to increase adherence as a tangible factor in population health management by decreasing adverse reactions, readmissions and ED visits at a time when value-based care models are focused on these and other performance measures.


To date we’ve had successful implementations within healthcare organizations, and continue to develop other connectivity platforms around patient-reported outcomes, physician-patient networks and integrated remote monitoring.
