Philips to CMS: Telehealth Critical to ACOs

February 9, 2015

In comments filed with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Philips Healthcare says that the power of telehealth services in helping providers coordinate care and improve both efficiencies and quality make them vital to accountable care organizations (ACOs).

Philips made the comments in response to a CMS proposal that would make changes in its Medicare shared-savings ACO program and, in particular, encourage use of telehealth services to improve care coordination.

“Philips believes that coordinated telehealth programs are the only cost-effective solution to systematically manage patient populations with ongoing needs, particularly those with medically complex and/or chronic conditions,” wrote Philips. It urged CMS to adopt a policy that facilitates broad coverage of telehealth services for Medicare beneficiaries assigned to all Medicare ACOs.
