Medicare ACOs Improving Quality, Lowering Costs, Says CMS

The latest results on the performance of Medicare ACOs shows continued progress in quality improvement and cost savings, according to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).Pioneer ACOs and Shared Savings ACOs generated more than $372 million in savings during the past year

 

The data come from preliminary quality and financial results from the second year of performance for Medicare’s 23 Pioneer ACOs and the first year of performance for 220 Shared Savings ACO, said the agency.

 

Pioneer ACOs:

 

  • Achieved lower per capita spending growth than fee-for-service Medicare
  • Saved an estimated $96 million
  • Improved quality scores by 19%

 

Shared Savings ACOs:

 

  • Improved on 30 of 33 quality measures
  • 53 held spending $652 million below their targets
  • An additional 52 reduced costs compared to their benchmark
