How to use an ear thermometer

Ear thermometers are a quick and safe way to take your baby’s temperature. This guide will walk you through how to take an accurate temperature and how to use an ear thermometer safely.

1. Before measuring, make sure the probe tip of the thermometer is clean.

2. Press the power button to switch on the device.

3. Hold the outer ear and gently pull it straight back.

4. Insert the probe tip very gently and slowly into the ear canal. Make sure the probe tip points straight towards the eardrum when you hold it.

5. Always insert the probe tip into the same ear, in the same direction and at the same depth.

6. Press the button to start the measurement.

7. When the measurement is done, you can then remove the probe tip from the ear canal. The display shows the measured temperature.

Important to note:

Always use the ear thermometer in line with instructions for use and to always seek professional medical advice without delay. Philips advises users against relying on the ear thermometer as sole basis for a decision for seeking treatment and/or professional help.  Especially when the patient is a newborn (0-3 months), small child (4-36 months) or patient of any age that may not be able to communicate or take care of themselves.
