Unified reporting for a seamless integration

Located in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the Alexander Fleming Institute (IAF) is recognized as one of Latin America’s premier private oncology centers. With more than 9,000 imaging studies monthly and a team of 40+ subspecialized radiologists, IAF faced mounting pressure: increasing patient volumes, complex multidisciplinary reporting, and the demand to deliver precise information faster than ever. 

Continuous adoption of cutting-edge technologies such as PET-MRI and densitometry expanded capabilities but also introduced complexity. With an annual increase of 8 to 10%, this expansion has been fueled by the continuous incorporation of advanced diagnostic technologies such as tomography, PET-MRI, and densitometry. These additions have enabled the institute to offer a more comprehensive and integrated imaging service, especially critical in oncology,where a holistic view of the patient is essential for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment planning.  “Our challenge is maintaining the quality and depth of each report while delivering results quickly, especially for complex oncology cases,” explains Dr. Lisandro Paganini, Head of Radiology, IAF. 

IAF sought a solution to unify workflows, integrate advanced post-processing, and enhance collaboration. The answer came through a fully integrated radiology platform combining interactive multimedia reporting, advanced visualization, voice recognition, and interoperability with other clinical systems. 

The implementation of the unified workspace marked a cultural transformation. Reports now feature embedded hyperlinks, lesion tracking, and tumor evolution charts, enabling referring physicians to quickly navigate findings and visualize disease progression over time. Multimedia-enriched reports improve communication, providing objective comparisons and visualization that are especially critical for oncology cases such as lung nodule monitoring. 

“It saves time. Referring physicians can jump directly to key findings, which improves communication across teams” shares Dr. Paganini. Time savings of up to 10 minutes per case now translate into more detailed insights and better collaboration across specialties. 

Behind the scenes, interoperability ensures seamless communication between admissions, billing, scheduling, and clinical systems. “Our reality forces us to work on continuous interoperability. Each system solves one piece of the healthcare puzzle, and our role is to make sure those pieces fit together", explains Martin Bonorino, Deputy Systems Manager, IAF. Today, every step, from patient registration to report delivery, is digitized, standardized, and accessible via patient and clinician portals. The result: faster turnaround, fewer manual tasks, and streamlined experience for staff and patients alike. 

By eliminating redundant steps and integrating visualization tools, IAF has significantly reduced errors and reporting backlogs Patients benefit directly through real-time access to their results, reducing unnecessary visits and eliminating the need for printouts, a key step toward sustainability and patient-centered care. Looking ahead, IAF envisions AI-powered solutions that help prioritize reading lists, suggest findings, and provide contextual clinical data within the same unified workspace. “We want to lead in AI. That means training radiologists to understand, validate, and shape the tools, not just use them” says Dr. Paganini. For IAF, the partnership is about more than technology.
