    Why now

ASCs and OBLs are popular care site models due to financial and operational benefits to the healthcare industry:

    • Patients want more convenient, comfortable and personal options for services that are closer to home, with shorter wait times
    • Peripheral artery disease affects approximately 21 million people in the US and is projected to rise to over 24 million by 20302
    • Cardiac procedures performed in an ASC have a 35-50% lower cost than in the hospital, which can then be passed on to the patient3
    • Estimates show that ASCs will account for 30-35% of all cardiac procedures by the mid-2020s4

When you are ready to open a physician-owned lab, there are a variety of different directions you can take your operations and care goals. You will need to consider the organizational structure and ownership model: 100% physician owned, Joint venture with other physicians, management company involvement, etc. You will also need to determine the type of lab you want to open:
    - OBL (CMS Place of Service Code: 11) - ASC (CMS Place of Service Code: 24) - OBL and ASC hybrid model (CMS place of service code: 24 or 11)

Independent of a hospital location Single or multi-specialty focused; many use OBL for diagnostic procedures and is popular for peripheral vascular and endovascular cases OBLs bill a single/global fee that includes both physician and facility/practice fee You should consider the necessary life-safety and building codes that will apply (OSHA, state, city, etc.)

Independent of a hospital location Single or multi-specialty focused (cardiovascular, orthopedics, spine, endoscopy, ophthalmology, etc.) Center bills insurance company or patient directly for facility charges; physicians bill separately for services Operating, licensing and certificate of need requirements for each state; cardiac procedures are only allowed in certain states Specific and stringent building requirements Separate from hospital campus; cannot share space with a hospital outpatient department or Medicare-participating independent diagnostic testing facility (IDTF)

OBL and ASC, independent of hospital location Operates as an OBL on certain days and an ASC on other days (some form of temporal separation) Must have medical records for both OBL and ASC store separately Must have separate tax IDs and operate as separate entities on separate days Only allowed in certain states Must take into consideration both OBL and ASC requirements and regulations that vary by each state
