Tumor Ablation using Cone Beam CT and XperGuide
Image-guided therapy

Biopsy and tumor ablation

Highly accurate needle interventions with Cone Beam CT

Lesion heterogeneity and lack of conspicuity limit the quality of specimens as well as the feasibility of biopsies when performed under ultrasound or conventional CT. Our needle navigation technology with CBCT increases precision, and enables the targeting of smaller (<=1 cm) or heterogeneous lesions more accurately with less needle repositioning and at lower dose than conventional CT.1, 2

Philips XperGuide Ablation

Advanced planning and guidance for tumor ablation

Performing successful tumor ablations, without compromising adjacent tissue, requires a clear understanding of the tumor size, the specific needle's ablation area, and the path to the target.

Demonstrated results in needle interventions with Cone Beam CT

  1. 17%

reduction in procedure time with Azurion3

    17%

reduction in procedure time with Azurion3

This is just one of the many improvements in lab performance achieved by the Interventional Vascular Department at St. Antonius Hospital after installing the Azurion system. The impressive results achieved in this first Azurion lab performance study have been verified by an independent third party.

  2. 2x

more accurate needle positioning compared to conventional CT1

    2x

more accurate needle positioning compared to conventional CT1

Accuracy, defined as the difference between planned and final needle positions, was two times more accurate for the Cone-Beam CT group, compared with conventional CT.

  3. 6x

less repositioning compared to conventional CT1

    6x

less repositioning compared to conventional CT1

The mean number of needle repositions in the Cone-Beam CT group was six times less compared with conventional CT.

  4. 29%

lower skin dose compared to conventional CT1

    29%

lower skin dose compared to conventional CT1

The average skin entry dose was 29% lower with Cone-Beam CT than with conventional CT.

Comprehensive approach to biopsy and ablation supports successful outcomes

Percutaneous ablation is a well-established minimally invasive tumor treatment. To perform a complete procedure and reduce the chances of surrounding tissue damage, it’s critical to define tumor boundaries and decide on needle characteristics, the number of needles and the corresponding needle trajectory. Navigating accurately to the lesion increases the opportunity for success and reduces risk of biopsy or ablation complications. 3D imaging with live guidance can be used to (re)position and advance the needle under low dose and verify the treatment endpoint while the patient is on the table.

Decide, guide, treat and confirm

  • Optimize the needle position for effective ablation with XperGuide Ablation
  • Monitor your needle insertion at low dose with ClarityIQ. Have live trajectory guidance with XperGuide
  • Confirm the completeness of your ablation with SmartCT Soft Tissue

Advances for biopsy and ablation

  • SmartCT Soft Tissue is augmented with step-by-step guidance and advanced 3D visualization and measurement tools, accessible on the touchscreen module at tableside
  • XperGuide offers highly accurate live image guidance of each needle to a targeted position by overlaying pre-planned trajectories with fluoroscopic imaging2
  • DualView overlays a pre-procedural 3D image (CT/MR/PET-CT) on an intra-procedural CBCT Dual so you can better visualize lesions and access critical input for needle planning
  • Post-ablation CBCT demonstrates the extent of tumor coverage and confirms treatment completeness
