CoxHealth, a leading health system in southwest Missouri, partnered with Philips to build a human-centered virtual command center that helps them to support nurses, enhance clinical decision-making and enable team collaboration. With centralized expertise and seamless escalation pathways, this model helps frontline teams act faster and feel more connected.

Bedside and virtual nurse provide care to patient

At-a-glance:

  • Virtual command center supports med-surg and step-down units
  • ICU-trained staff provide real-time support during codes and rapid response
  • Human-centered design improves collaboration across clinical teams
  • Watchful assistance and mentorship available at the press of a button

CoxHealth’s virtual care journey began in the ICU but quickly evolved into a broader vision supporting nurses across the entire hospital. With Philips, they built a virtual command center designed to scale support to med-surg and step-down units, while creating stronger connections between bedside and centralized teams.

In one powerful example, a virtual team flagged a med-surg patient whose data didn’t look right. Within the hour, that patient was in the OR receiving life-saving surgery thanks to early escalation and team coordination.

This isn’t just about data or devices, it’s about redefining how teams work together. From faster clinical response to peer mentorship and team trust, the partnership with Philips has changed the way care is delivered.

When asked about implementing a virtual command center at CoxHealth, Beth Polivka, System Chief Nursing Officer and Senior Vice President, shared

It’s nothing for members of the care team without members of the care team… this is the fingerprint we’re leaving on nursing.
