  • March 17 2025
  • Duration 54:7

Tyler Christifulli, a flight paramedic at LifeLink III, has extensive knowledge and experience using obstetric ultrasound in the prehospital environment, especially during medical flights. In this webinar, he delves into which clinical questions can be answered with point-of-care sonography, shares ways to scan a pregnant woman and makes suggestions about communicating the findings to her.

Webinar with flight paramedic about using obstetric ultrasound

At-a-glance:

  • [3:55] A case study of how obstetric ultrasound can be used in the prehospital environment after a trauma
  • [25:40] Collecting data points by looking for placenta previa and placenta abruption
  • [35:34] Communicating ultrasound findings with the pregnant woman
  • [39:23] Q/A with webinar attendees

In his work as a paramedic, Christifulli finds it useful to separate prehospital obstetric ultrasound into three areas: the mom, baby and the placenta. When doing the ultrasound assessment, he first works to find out if the mother is OK, and then zeroes in on the baby, including getting images of the baby’s lungs and heart, before looking at the placenta.

Among his many tips for communicating the findings with the mother:

  • Stick with objective observations.
  • Record and then show her fetal movement and show the fetal heart rate to reassure her that the baby is OK.
