ED Clinical Training

Clinical educators delivering comprehensive training programs

Our approach to education is both didactic and experience-based. The didactic component is comprised of classroom time specific to the training program, while also focusing on clinical competencies, behavioral competencies, and skills validation.

Our education also includes clinical oversight, mentoring individuals on the topic scovered in the classroom and assuring both competency validation and inter-rater reliability. We can also provide onsite resources to provide real-time feedback, enhancing the skills learned in the classroom environment and embedding these skills in the practice arena.

Triage training

Initial identification of patient acuity is essential to the successful treatment of emergency department patients. False identification can lead to patient delays and ultimately can affect patient safety. Effective triage provides an opportunity to improve patient care, safety, and satisfaction. Providing a consistent approach to the educational preparation is paramount.

The didactic component is comprised of classroom time dedicated to understanding how to apply the Emergency Severity Index 5-Level triage system, anevidenced-based, objective triage system. The didactic component also focuses on clinical competencies, behavioral competencies, interviewing skills and customer services skills.

We also offer a train-the-trainer course, focusing on adult learning principles, presentation skills and providing feedback, to train super-users among your staff to ensure continuity.

Charge nurse training

The charge nurse is the frontline leader on a shift-by-shift, day-by-day basis. It is imperative that your charge nurses can manage patient flow, match resources to changing demand and solve problems. Our program is designed to provide charge nurses with the essential tools needed to become effective leaders.

Our approach to charge nurse education is both didactic and experience-based. The didactic component is comprised of classroom time dedicated to the following components:

  • Effective communication techniques
  • Delegation
  • Conflict management
  • Creating effective teams
  • Working with dysfunctional teams
  • Customer service and rounding
  • Change management
  • Coaching mentoring and role modeling

While the didactic component is essential for charge nurse development, mentoring and monitoring behaviors in the clinical environment are equally important.

How we enable the transformation process

Clinical Expertise

Clinical Expertise
Philips’ team of education and consulting experts works collaboratively with the institution to define the appropriate mix of educational components to include in each training solution. The goal is to optimize the knowledge transfer and competency development that is required to perform safe and effective patient care, which may lead to improved staff satisfaction and quality patient care.

Experience Flow Mapping

Experience Flow Mapping
Experience Flow Mapping is a unique and structured methodology to provide an insights-based view of the patient journey and clinical processes. We map-out the data points and insights gained from deep data analysis as well as stakeholder interviews and workflow observations. The experience flow map visually summarizes the patient journey, areas of concern, and the most impactful opportunities for improvement. These maps are usually the size of a meeting room wall.

A targeted focus on the ED

Our nationally-recognized consultants are positioned to understand and address challenges unique to the ED environment. We bring a talented pool of emergency care expertise, as well as offer:

  • Consultants with active leadership roles in the national emergency care community.
  • Access to ED professionals and industry best practices.
  • A unique awareness of how the ED connects with and relies upon the operations of all hospital departments.
  • An interest in forming lasting relationships and building long-term teams among the staff members at each facility.
  • An ability to create strategies that remain effective long after we have completed our on-site engagements.
