In October, 2016, CMS released final regulations for implementing the new physician payment system passed by Congress, called the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act, or MACRA. Payment updates under this system will be based on how well physicians perform on outcomes, quality, and cost measures. The system introduces two separate tracks for payment adjustments and incentives—the Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) and the Advanced Alternative Payment Models (AAPM). CMS will begin implementing the system in January, 2017 and make payment adjustments based on 2017 performance in 2019.
