More ACOs Approved by Medicare

January 15, 2014

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has approved 123 new accountable care organizations, bringing the total number of Medicare ACOs to more than 360.ACOs are groups of doctors, hospitals, and other health care providers that join together to provide coordinated care for patients.

The new ACOs are all organized as “shared-savings” model ACOs, so-named because Medicare allows such ACOs to share in any cost savings if they achieve specific quality and cost benchmarks. The start date of the new ACOs was January 1, 2014. Since passage of the Affordable Care Act, which authorized Medicare ACOs, more than 5.3 million Medicare beneficiaries receive medical care from providers associated with an ACO.
