The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid services has begun a national review to determine if low-dose CT lung cancer screening for high-risk smokers should be included as a preventive service covered by Medicare. All public comments on the issue must be submitted by March 11, 2014.
The review follows a recommendation by the United States Preventive Services Task in December, 2013, supporting such screening for heavy smokers age 55 - 80. Based upon a review of the evidence, the task force gave the recommendation a B rating.
Under the Affordable Care Act, Medicare must cover recommendations rated A or B without requiring patient cost sharing.
