Healthy cooking: vegetarian and vegan

Before we get into the pasta, let’s address the question that many people often ask: is vegetarian food healthy? The answer is yes, when it’s prepared the right way. When cooking with many different types of vegetables, vitamins can actually be lost if you don’t pay attention to how you cook them, particularly vitamin C, which is water soluble and heat sensitive.* Try these four different, yet tasty ways to cook vegetables while preserving their nutritional goodness:

  • Steam: Instead of cooking vegetables in water, steam them gently on a low temperature for a short amount of time to help preserve their original nutrients.
  • Grill: Grilling is perfect for summer dishes and extremely easy to do. Simply drizzle your chosen veggie in a little olive oil and season accordingly. To avoid using foil, place under a medium grill in a cast iron skillet or a similar piece of metal cookware.
  • Roast: Preheat your oven to 400°F, before placing your veggie on a baking tray. Season and drizzle your vegetable with oil and place it in the oven for 45 to 55 minutes.
  • Stir-fry: All you need is a little olive oil! Simply toss the vegetables in the pan over a high heat, for around 2 to 3 minutes.
Tip: For a delicious taste while only using a mere tablespoon or less of oil, consider an air fryer as a healthy alternative to traditional frying. The Philips Airfryer XXL comes with a grill master kit to guide you when grilling generous amounts of veggies at the same time – ideal if you’re making vegan pasta recipes or other dishes that require lots of vegetables!
