Treating Gum Disease Is Crucial for Oral Health

Why gum health is important

Improved oral health is an indicator of good overall health. The clearest indicator of this is the gums. They can indicate a diet too high in certain foods, too much alcohol consumption, or even have some correlation with heart disease. The gums are made of living tissue that connects the teeth to the mouth, so it’s vitally important that they are kept free of diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis.

What is gingivitis?

Healthy gums should be a light pink colour. If they’re a deeper pink or red, if they bleed when brushed, or if they’re tender to the touch, this may be a sign of gingivitis. This is an accumulation of bacteria, otherwise known as plaque, that is brought on by inadequate oral hygiene. Left untreated, this in turn hardens into tartar, which is hard to remove. Gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease, and is treatable with improved oral hygiene. If left untreated, it can worsen into periodontal disease.

What is periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease, or periodontitis, is the advanced form of gingivitis. Its name refers to the inflammation of the perodontium, which are the tissues that surround and support the teeth. This leads to the recession of the gums from the teeth, and as bacteria begin to thrive in the resulting ‘pockets’, the breakdown of the bone and connective tissue that hold the teeth in place. Periodontitis is a serious problem that may require surgical treatment.

How Philips Sonicare can help

Philips Sonicare can be an extremely effective way to prevent gum disease. The brush head vibrates at precisely the right frequency to disrupt plaque gently, which means that it’s easier to remove plaque from the teeth, and the gums. In its early stage, gum disease is treatable with an improved oral health routine. If left to worsen into periodontal disease, it’s best to consult a dental professional.
