As night falls over Seattle, people begin lining up outside Seattle Center—some as early as 10 PM—hoping to receive healthcare services they can’t afford elsewhere. Each year, for four transformative days, Seattle/King County Clinic converts this cultural landmark into the nation’s largest pop-up community-driven free health clinic—delivering critical care to thousands in need.
Since its inception in 2014, the Clinic has served over 33,000 patients, saving them more than $30 million in out-of-pocket healthcare costs. For many, this clinic offers access to routine screenings and preventive care that would otherwise be out of reach — services that play a critical role in improving long-term health outcomes. Over the past decade, Philips’ involvement has grown from a volunteer initiative into a deeply embedded partnership, encompassing advanced diagnostic technology, committed volunteers, and essential oral health supplies—further strengthening the Clinic’s impact.
The idea for Seattle/King County Clinic emerged during Seattle Center’s 50th anniversary. Founder and Project Executive Julia Colson emphasizes the critical role of collaboration in bringing this vision to life. "It takes every person and organization involved, each contributing unique strengths," Julia explains. "Together with partners like Philips, we've built something extraordinary."
Central to the Clinic's effectiveness are Philips’ portable diagnostic technologies, including ultrasounds and X-ray systems, enabling rapid and accurate patient assessments. Jeff Cohen, Global Business Leader at Philips Ultrasound, highlights the significant impact of immediate diagnostics: "Our technology helps clinicians quickly identify conditions requiring urgent care or surgery, significantly improving patient outcomes."

Patients like Stephanie rely on Seattle/King County Clinic as an essential lifeline. A professional dog walker, Stephanie depends on the Clinic for dental and podiatric care not covered by her insurance but crucial to her livelihood. "This clinic is life for us," she emphasizes, praising the dignity and respect shown by volunteers and staff, as well as tangible support such as Philips’ Sonicare toothbrushes. Another patient, CJ, offers a different but equally powerful perspective on the Clinic’s impact. He first arrived with urgent dental needs. “Both teeth shattered when tapped, leading to two root canals and crowns,” CJ recalls. The advanced technology behind his treatment left a lasting impression: “Watching crowns created with digital imaging blew my mind. I’m a ‘tech guy,’ so that was incredible.”
Today, CJ volunteers as a Dental Checkout Lead, guiding others through the final steps of their care. Philips supports this essential area by providing Sonicare toothbrushes to every patient—which CJ describes as “tools for wellness,” especially for those without regular access to dental services. “This clinic gave me more than care—it provided a meaningful way to give back,” he reflects.
The enduring success of this partnership offers a replicable model for healthcare leaders nationwide. Julia envisions a future where improved access to healthcare eliminates the need for free clinics. Until then, "partnerships like the one we have with Philips remain crucial," she insists.
Philips’ impact extends well beyond providing advanced technology, fostering a strong culture of volunteerism. Annually, Philips volunteers support the Clinic by filling nearly 400 shifts ranging from clinical assistance to patient navigation. Julia recognizes this deeper commitment: “It’s meaningful when a partner not only shares resources but genuinely participates. Philips volunteers consistently invest themselves, building lasting community relationships.”
The decade-long partnership between Philips and Seattle/King County Clinic showcases what's possible when innovation meets compassion. Philips invites healthcare leaders nationwide to join this collaborative approach, combining advanced technology, dedicated volunteerism, and community engagement to dismantle barriers and deliver better care for more people.
