Inexpensive and functional
Our DVD player died and we needed a new one. Our local big-box store had the BDP3306 on sale for a good price and we have been very happy with our Philips internet radio, so we opted for this model. I had looked into the features and specs of this unit and several others. I thought this version had UPnP for access to my local media server, but I was thinking of the step up. No big loss since the internet radio does UPnP, I was just hoping to consolidate the two units into one. I care much more about audio than video (7.1 system and a TV that only does 720p) and was glad to see that this entry level unit did Master-HD audio bitstreaming as well as all other major formats. I promptly tested out the audio using a 96k/24bit DTS audio DVD and it worked flawlessly (letting my receiver/DAC decode it). I purchased a Blu-Ray disc with a Master-HD soundtrack and it worked very nicely. All-in-all I'm not convinced that Blu-Ray is an important upgrade for most movies--they simply don't have source material which benefits from the move from DVD to Blu-Ray. For newer movies, especially those with high-quality audio-tracks, I can see some benefit. Also, the higher bit-rate does improve animated content--especially cartoons; there are fewer problems with aliasing where large blocks of the same color are on the screen (e.g. the yellow in the Simpsons). But this is a conversation about media and not the unit. The BDP3306 works as advertised. I've not yet tested the internet features (Netflix, WDU, etc) and mostly use it for watching DVDs, playing audio DVDs and watching the rare Blu-Ray disc. DVDs play quickly and without error. Blu-Rays can take several minutes to load. I find it annoying that it contacts the internet every time a new disc is inserted. I've had no problems at all with the unit.
