No Problems With This DVR
This DVR records as easily as a VCR, and plays back as easily as a DVD player. You can record on one channel, while watching another. You can use a TV with an antenna, a cable wall line or a cable box. I use an antenna TV and a cable wall line TV. Everything has recorded as programmed and has played back beautifully. The DVR is so small that you can easily move it from one TV to another. Just make sure you set the clock after moving it. Unplugging the DVR makes it instantly loose its time. To playback, without having the DVR turn off, you must set the clock. Just do it manually; it only takes a minute. Connecting to the internet was simple, and Netflix looks as good as it does any other way I have streamed it.

Excellent video, but buggy software
The Philips HDR5710 Is an excellent machine for cord cutters, but it's also proof that cord cutting is not quite ready for the masses. The video quality is truly excellent while watching live or recordings, but the user interface is more than just a little quirky. The tuner is not as sensitive as most TVs, so an extra amplifier is probably in order. Recordings will sometimes pixelize in a way that suggests that the machine is having a hard time keeping up, but the worst is yet to come. Under no circumstances should you EVER attempt to rewind a video. If you rewind during the last chapter of a video the video will typically restart at the beginning. Rewinding near the start of a video is OK, but if you are at minute 25 of a 30 minute video and you start to rewind the video will restart at the beginning. If you attempt this a few times the machine will crash. Now the fun really starts; each time you attempt to watch the video the machine will crash. Since playing the video causes a crash, you'll be hard-pressed to delete the video because selecting the video instantly starts a preview, and with that, a crash! After a few crashes, with the CLANK of the hard drive head slamming against the stop, the video is sometimes deleted by the machine. I programmed a universal remote to skip back when the rewind button is hit, just to prevent video destruction and jack hammering the hard drive. I mentioned quirky, right? The DVR will allow time shifting of a video quite easily. Just press Record while viewing and then press Play; with that you're time-shifting a live program. You can pause, skip back (don't press rewind, EVER, remember?), and fast forward sometimes. I say sometimes, because sometimes when you catch up with live video the DVR will crash.... again. Another problem, if there's a power failure the clock will be lost even if you have it set for AUTO. That means programs will not be recorded until you manually tell the machine to use the AUTO clock setting, even though the machine is already set for AUTO clock setting. So, there are a few quirks to driving the DVR, but the video quality is still very, very good. Hopefully Philips will read this and fix the firmware, so maybe, someday, the video quality will be excellent and the user interface will be its equal.
