With new technologies it has become easier and more pleasant to take multiple readings; however in most cases this isn't necessary. Multiple factors will affect your reading:
- Probe placement
- The time of day
- Variation in body temperature due to physical activity or illness
- The temperature of the ear itself which can, for example, be influenced by wearing a cap or lying on a pillow
