The pressure gauge of my Philips Barista Brew Espresso Machine is not working

    Published on 17 July 2024
If the pressure gauge of your Philips Barista Brew Espresso Machine is not moving or goes beyond the optimal espresso range while brewing coffee, read our article to find possible causes and solutions.

If the pressure gauge is not moving to the indicated optimal espresso range (see image) and the needle stays in the left bottom dotted area, it means the coffee brew is under-extracted. Please ensure you ground the correct dosage of ground coffee for the filter basket (1 or 2 cups) you are using and tamp the coffee correctly.

    Note:
    • Grinding a single dosage, while using the 2-cup filter basket, will result in under-extraction. The pressure gauge will remain in the grey area or not move at all, and the coffee will taste watery.
    • Grinding a double dosage, while using the 1-cup filter basket, will lead to over-extraction. The pressure gauge will move fully to the right upper corner and your coffee will have a burned bitter taste and there will be no crema.
Apply the right amount of coffee, we recommend 12 – 14 grams for a single cup and 18 – 20 grams for a double cup.

When you have the right dosage for the filter basket you are using but the pressure gauge is not moving to the Optimal range it means the coffee brew is under or over-extracted.

That could happen due to the grind size or tamping of the ground coffee.

    • If the needle is in the left lower corner, try a finer grind or apply more force when tamping the ground coffee.
    • If the needle is in the upper right corner, try a coarser grind or tamp the ground coffee with less force.
