In case the ground coffee is too coarse, the coffee becomes under-extracted, resulting in low pressure, and short brewing time with a bitter and watery taste. With the Philips Barista Brew Espresso Machine with an integrated grinder, you have the option to grind the beans to a finer coarse grind. There are 15 different grind settings you can choose from where the lower the number indication on the bean container is, the finer the coffee beans are ground, and the stronger the coffee.
One of the most important parts of making a great coffee with your machine is the tamping of the ground coffee. If you do not tamp the coffee with enough force, it will lower the pressure and shorten brewing time making it under-extracted with bitter and watery taste. To avoid that, apply enough force so that the top edge of the metal cap on the tamper levels with the top of the portafilter holder. The calibrated tamper will help you to control the force.
If you use less ground coffee than the recommended amount, the result will not have the desired strength and it may taste watery. The optimum amount is 12 – 14 grams for a single cup and 18 – 20 grams for a double cup. With the “Grind Amount” knob you can control to grind more or less coffee ground.
