    Frequently Asked Questions

At which age should my baby start drinking from cup?

Learning to drink independently is a process which takes about 15 months and starts when your baby is around 4 months old and ready to move away from a bottle with a nipple, towards a cup with a spout which allows more liquid through.

Are Philips Avent cups dishwasher and microwave safe?

Yes, Philips Avent cups are dishwasher and microwave safe. If the product contains any small parts, place them on the top rack of the dishwasher.

Are Philips Avent cups BPA free?

Yes, Philips Avent cups are BPA free.

Can fizzy, pulpy or hot drinks go in the cup?

These cups are intended for use with healthy drinks. Water and milk are the best drinks for children of any age. Thick, fizzy or pulpy drinks may block our valves and cause it to break or leak. Also, it is not recommended to fill the cup with hot liquid. To prevent scalding, allow the hot liquid to cool down before you fill the cup. We don’t advise to use formula milk with a spout, only with a bottle teat, as this can clog the holes and cause the spout cup to leak.

What is the benefit of handles?

Handles help your baby to easily grasp the cup and learn to drink independently. Some of the Philips Avent cup handles have been designed for anti-slip and feature rubberized grips making them easy for a toddler to grasp onto.

How can my baby learn to drink independently from a cup?
    Stage 1

Make the first step in learning to drink (4m+)

At this stage your baby learns to lift up their head, sit upright and begins to grasp objects. To start their journey to independent drinking we have developed trainer cups with training handles which your baby can grasp easily and that come with both a bottle’s nipple as well as a soft silicone spout to ease baby’s transition.

    Stage 2

Develop drinking skills with no mess (6m+)

By this stage your child will be developing his/her oral motor skills and will be able to handle a cup independently. Philips Avent offers a range of no-spill spout cups with different styles, shapes and handle options to suit your child’s needs, building his/her confidence and offering you reassurance.

    Stage 3

Expand into new drinking skills (12m+)

For toddlers around 12 months old, a straw offers a new set of skills to learn. The Philips Avent straw cup means your toddler will not have to tilt the cup to drink from it. Using the straw trains mouth muscles, advances oral motor and swallowing skills, and helps to promote speech development.

    Stage 4

Learn to drink like a grown up (12m+)

Your toddler now wants to feel like a grown up and drink from an open cup just like Mom and Dad. The revolutionary Philips Avent Natural Drinking Cup is the ideal solution to support your child’s transition to adult drinking.

Supporting these stages with the right products will help your babies to drink independently from a cup. The ages are just indications as every baby develops at his/her own pace.

Which cup is the right cup for my child?

    Trainer Cup

To start their journey to independent drinking, we have developed trainer cups with training handles which your baby can grasp easily and that come with both a bottle’s nipple as well as a soft silicone spout. The Natural and Classic+ trainer cup eases your baby into their first cup. The comfort grips help your baby hold the bottle independently while drinking from the familiar nipple. The handles of the Philips Avent Natural trainer cup are not only shaped for little hands to grasp easily, they are also designed for anti-slip. When ready, switch to the silicone spout to complete the transition.

    Spout Cup

If your child is ready switch to a cup with a spout, soft spouts are ideal to start with. A soft spout made of silicone is gentle on your toddler’s gums and is flexible to support those first sips.
Hard spouts are bite resistant and therefore ideal when your child grows and start using his/her teeth.
Leakproof, spill-free spout cups make drinking easy for your child and convenient for you. Handles help your toddler to hold the cup and drink independently. But also the rippled containers are designed to allow easy grip for little hands and are shaped for steady grip.

    Spout Cup

    Straw Cup

Straw cups offer a new set of skills to learn for toddlers around 12 months. Using the straw trains mouth muscles, advances oral motor and swallowing skills, and helps to promote speech development. The Philips Avent straw cup is leak-proof and easy for the toddler to use independently with its unique twist lid. Ideal for on-the-go.

    Natural Drinking Cup

The spoutless, strawless Natural Drinking Cup helps your toddler transition to grown up drinking, without the mess. The unique, spill-proof and fast-flow valve is lip activated so liquid will only flow when the toddler presses his or her lip against the rim. The cup allows for effortless drinking from 360-degrees, all around the rim just like an adult's cup, but without the mess!
