    6 min read

A man with dark hair looking into a mirror while cutting his hair into a wolf cut with a Philips Norelco All-in-One Trimmer.

Whether you’re a daring trendsetter – always on the lookout for your next hairstyle – or you’re looking to try a new style out for a change, it might be time for a new look. Enter the wolf cut for men, the hairstyle making waves across Korea. Read on to find out all there is to know about the wolf cut, learn how to do a wolf cut at home and the very best maintenance and styling tips.

What is the wolf cut for men?

If you’ve never heard of the wolf cut on men or have only seen the wolf cut styled on women, you might have thought you can’t get wolf cut hair for men. But you can, and it’s quite the look! A more modern take on the mullet but with a shaggy twist, it typically features voluminous layers, thinner feathered ends, and a more developed fringe which can be parted like curtains.

Different versions of a guys’ wolf cut

Although the style has gained popularity globally, the wolf cut was popularized in Korea, the hotbed of fashionable trends and daring styles. This means there are several unique takes on a men’s wolf cut that you can try.

Here are some of our favorite variations of the men’s wolf cut:

    • Center parting wolf cut for men. Just as the name suggests, this is a standard wolf cut but with a center parting in the fringe.
    • Curly wolf cut for men. Proving its versatility, this variation on the guy’s wolf cut involves some serious waves by taking the standard wolf cut style and adding permed or natural curls. This variation can be styled quite well with the high-fade wolf cut: simply employ a fade on the sides while perming the top of the haircut (or using those natural curls).
    • High-fade wolf cut for men. This variation of the wolf cut is a little more technically challenging and requires more maintenance. It involves the usual wolf cut on the top, front, and back, but with a high fade shaved into the sides. The combination of shorter sides with longer, shaggier hair elsewhere provides some great contrast and is sure to capture attention. For an even bolder look, ditch the fade and go for an undercut instead.
    • Colored wolf cut for men. Last but not least, we have the colored wolf cut. By layering vibrant color highlights throughout, you can turn this already bold trim into a spectacle. Whether it’s shades of a darker blue or a vibrant pink, fashionistas have been shading their wolf cuts to create unique and daring looks. And best of all, you can color any style of wolf cut – the combinations are endless.

    Who suits a wolf cut?

While the wolf cut is especially well suited to round face shapes and thick or wavy hair types, whether it is right for you is your choice entirely. It’s all about what makes you feel good and with so many variations to this style there is bound to be one that works for you.

How to cut a wolf cut at home: A step-by-step guide

Now you know exactly what a wolf cut is, you might want to style your very own. Knowing how to cut wolf cuts at home can be a little tricky but the good news is you’ll only need a few tools to cut your Korean wolf cut. Male haircuts, like the buzz cut, may be simpler to achieve but they might not offer the striking impact you’re looking for.

If you haven't cut your hair or anyone else's before, you might want to choose a different style to start with. Or consider visiting a professional barber for your first wolf cut to establish the initial shape, then maintain it yourself at home.

Here’s what you'll need for that wolf cut at home:

    1. A high-quality trimmer, like the Philips Norelco All-in-One Trimmer Series 9000
    2. Comb
    3. Scissors (for detailing)
    4. Hair ties or clips
    5. Mirror (a handheld mirror for viewing the back is helpful)
    6. Hairdryer (optional, for styling)
    7. Texturizing or sea salt spray (optional, for finishing)

Step-by-step guide for how to cut a wolf cut:

    1. Wash and dry your hair. Start with clean, slightly damp, hair as it's easier to cut and manage. If your hair is too wet, it might look longer than it is, which can lead to cutting off too much.
    2. Divide your hair into sections. Use hair ties or clips to separate your hair into top, middle, and bottom layers:
      • Top layer: This is the crown and will contain most of the volume.
      • Middle layer: The transitional area around the head.
      • Bottom layer: The hair around the neck and base of the head.
    3. Cutting the bottom layer. If you’re using the All-in-One Trimmer, simply attach the #4 or #5 guard from the multi-guard set to begin with. Begin at the bottom layer at the back of your head, moving upwards and outwards. This layer should be cut relatively short but not too close to the scalp.
    4. Cutting the middle layer. Switch to a shorter guard (e.g. #3) for a gradual transition. Blend the middle layer into the bottom layer by running the clippers upward but slowly phasing out as you reach the upper bounds of this middle section to avoid a hard line.
    5. Cutting the top layer. Remove the guard or use the longest guard. The top layer needs length to create volume. Pull sections of the hair upwards with your comb and use the clippers (or scissors for more control) to trim the ends. Aim for a textured, layered look rather than a uniform length.
    6. Detailing and texturizing. Check for uneven areas by using a mirror to view the back and sides, then clean up any patchy spots with your clippers or scissors. Use scissors to add additional layers or texturize certain areas for a more feathered effect that adds volume. Focus on the hair at the top and front.
    7. Styling your wolf cut. For an extra layered look and to add a rugged, tousled finish, use a sea salt spray sparingly, preferably while the hair is still damp. Using a hairdryer can add more volume, but consider using a lower heat to protect your hair from any damage.
    8. Final touches. Take a look at your new wolf cut from all angles in the mirror. Make any final adjustments to ensure the layers blend well and the overall shape suits your face.

Wolf cut hair for men: Tips and maintenance

Cutting the wolf cut on men is only half the battle… now comes the maintenance. Maintaining your haircut can often be the difference between having that sharp or perfectly shaped look for weeks on end and needing to sit back in the barber’s chair for a full cut after a few months.

Now we know how to cut wolf cuts, here's how to maintain one:

    • Touch-up the trim every 4 to 6 weeks to maintain the shape and volume of the cut. This will help manage the layers and prevent the hairstyle from looking overgrown.
    • Use a trimmer that’s going to last. The Philips Norelco All-in-One Trimmer Series 9000’s self-sharpening steel blades ensure that your trimmer won’t only deliver precision trims, but do it for longer.
    • Use a volumizing shampoo to enhance the fullness of the hair, especially at the crown. Condition the ends more than the roots to prevent weighing down the hair at the top.
    • After washing, blow dry your hair while lifting at the roots with your fingers or a brush to enhance volume. Focus on drying the roots upwards and outwards to maximize the voluminous effect of the wolf cut.
    • Take your time, especially if it’s your first time cutting the wolf cut. With the All-in-One Trimmer Series 9000’s 15-hour runtime on a single charge, you can take all day!
    • Apply a light mousse or volumizing spray to damp hair before drying. For texture and definition, use a texturizing or sea salt spray. Finish with a light hairspray to hold the style without making it stiff.
    • Match up your beard to your haircut. Not only can this complement your haircut and your beard, but it will enhance your overall look, too.
