Our Healthcare Professional gives us her top tips for breastfeeding in public.
Breastfeeding on the go is convenient and hygienic, and the most natural and healthy way for your baby to feed.
You may feel more confident about feeding in public if you practice your feeding position at home first, e.g. without pillows and in different chairs.
When you’re out and about always try to sit down to feed and, if possible, sit in a comfortable chair, where your back will be more supported.
If you think you’re going to feel self-conscious, sit with your back to the majority of people in the restaurant or café.
Think about what you are wearing, choose a top which can be easily unbuttoned and avoids exposing more than you would like. There are some great nursing tops available that make it easier to breastfeed without having to strip off.
Placing a scarf, pashmina, shawl or muslin square over any exposed skin once your baby is latched-on can make you feel more comfortable.
It’s thirsty work so have a drink of water to hand and don’t sit too near a heat source as breastfeeding increases your body temperature.
Be proud of what a fantastic job you’re doing breastfeeding your baby. Be part of the growing groups of mothers who are really starting to make breastfeeding more visible, acceptable and an essential part of your baby’s day.
